Can A University Select What Religion Is Allowed On Campus?

Can a University in the Federation funded by the tax payers openly discriminate against freedom of association and religion?

We see a letter signed by Ag Dean of Student Affairs of the Umaru Musa YarAdua University saying ONLY Muslim Students Society of Nigeria are allowed to operate in the University.

This runs foul of the Nigerian constitution which says “every person shall be entitled  to freedom of expression…without interference “

The Constitution further states “every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons

Finally the constitution  says…”every person shall be entitled to freedom of religion…..either alone or in community with others and in public or private to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching practice and observance”

Are the officials of this university unaware of these express provisions in the Nigerian Constitution.

Ignorance of the law is not just a null excuse….it shows the quality of education that university is passing to her students.

Urgent redress and/or clarification must be taken by the Federal  Government on this matter.

  1. This is absolutely unacceptable. The dean is completely ignorant of the constitutional provisions or he is a terrorist, a member of the Boko Haram sect. He should resign or be sacked.
