How does one score a Senate?
By bills passed into law?
By quality of oversight?
By level of engagement?
By transparency and openness?
By quality of oversight?
By level of engagement?
By transparency and openness?
Its really all of the above
1. Bills passed: 11 Bills passed out of 300 received thats like 3.6%….poor…however number of bills is not the issue…quality of bills is.
We still have no PIB or amended Railway Bill which are critically important to Nigeria..we saw a so called “social media” bill introduced. . (and killed)….Womens equality bill also killed…
On this score Senate score is abysmally low, i score them an E
2. Quality of oversight…The 2016 budget was a mess, in the final days, the Senate did not cover herself with glory….well TSA template was “reviewed” based on Senate “queries”….Fixed Charge on power also reviewed based on Senate queries i also like the “noise” about Made in Nigeria products . ..but where is the robust oversight on the economic crisis, Herdsmen? Rule of Law?….even quality of care in IDPs. Senate scores D for effort.
3. Level of Engagement : much much better….The Senate President responds to tweets, more Senators are tweeting and interacting, and making themselves available for constructive criticisms ….this can be better…Senate scores C for effort
4. Transparency and Openness. .lets not waste time. ..Senate scores F….Senate promised to publish details of their budget ……they have not done so..
In a personal note, a bit disappointing no woman is in the leadership of the Senate. .. (no i don’t mean Women leader)
